Summer Reading. What was your favorite book that you were REQUIRED to read when you were in school?
Wow, it's been so long since I've been in school.... The first would be
Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare. It's not my favorite Shakespeare play- not even close- but reading it in the 6th grade made me feel that I could read any book in the world. Also, it started a kind of family tradition thing of going to see Shakespeare's plays on stage- I think we've seen most of them except some of the obscure ones that are rarely performed. My other favorite book would be
Oedipus Rex by Sophocles. I had already read Plato and Aristotle. But Oediupus Rex- the story of a man who couldn't escape his fate of marrying his mother and killing his father- touched off my love of all things (ancient) Greek.
i never had to read Julius Caesar. Shakespeare was low on my list of favorites in school. I liked all the other books.

Thank you for the follow. I'm a new follower of your blog as well!
ReplyDeleteI've never read "Julius Caesar" but I do know what you mean when you say it makes you feel like you can read anything. I've read other Shakespeare and once I stopped resisting and learned to enjoy it, I finally understood all the hype. :)
Oedipus Rex is also great. It's amazing to me how something written such a long time ago can really still last and be just as wonderful to modern audiences as it was to ancient ones.
Hahah! Sorry for the long rant! :)
Thanks for sharing. I have not read "Julius Caesar".

I read Shakespeare for the first time in middle school, not required but I was an ambitious reader, and you're right it does give you confidence that you can read things you never before thought were possible.
