Review: Unbreak My Heart by Melissa Walker

Unbreak My Heart

Goodreads Summary:
Sophomore year broke Clementine Williams’ heart. She fell for her best friend’s boyfriend and long story short: he’s excused, but Clem is vilified and she heads into summer with zero social life.

Enter her parents’ plan to spend the summer on their sailboat. Normally the idea of being stuck on a tiny boat with her parents and little sister would make Clem break out in hives, but floating away sounds pretty good right now.

Then she meets James at one of their first stops along the river. He and his dad are sailing for the summer and he’s just the distraction Clem needs. Can he break down Clem’s walls and heal her broken heart?

Told in alternating chapters that chronicle the year that broke Clem’s heart and the summer that healed it, Unbreak My Heart is a wonderful dual love story that fans of Sarah Dessen, Deb Caletti, and Susane Colasanti will flock to.

My Review:
I have mixed feelings about this book. Overall, it's a good summer read- cute, at times charming. On the other hand- just loathe the main character. This is the thing about cheating- it's not just the cheating itself that's horrible and hurtful. It's that cheaters have to lie- lie about everything: where they are, how they feel, etc. To be a cheater, you have to live a life of deception. I've always wondered, "Why?" What is the best case scenario? That you get the (cheating) guy or girl? Well, you're a cheater, too, so you have a relationship where both parties are cheaters. Nice foundation for a relationship- you definitely have a solid base of trust and honesty you can build upon for a long term commitment. (NOT!) Then you have her best friend Amanda- who takes the cheater back...so you have a cheater and a doormat.

Now, I must admit that the author must be a good writer if I found Clem- the lying, cheating, evil, skank of a character- somewhat sympathetic.  And compelling enough to keep reading. I think it was as much that the secondary characters in the book- her mother, father, sister, and James and his father- were so great. I wanted to see how their characters developed- especially James and his father.

By the way, don't be a cheater like Clem or a doormat like Amanda. This seems like a reasonable response if someone cheats on you with your best friend: (Sorry for the poor video/sound quality- not my youtube post. Also, I'm giving you fair warning before you click- bad language)

  1. Well, at least it seems like a typical high school cheating-type relationship. I saw it happen many a time when I was in high school. It's great that she had interesting background character though, because I don't think I'd be very sympathetic with the main character. Thanks for the review :)

    1. I guess I had good friends because I only had this happen to me once. And I pretty much cut the girl off after that. The rest of my friends and I wouldn't even date a former boyfriend of another friend. I mean who wants to see their ex-boyfriend pop up everywhere? The reason you break up with someone is so you don't have to see them every day.
