There are quite a few reasons why I hate this one.
1. Book covers where people are kissing. Just don't like it. Just don't like PDA.
2. The book cover is misleading. I saw it, thought it was a YA contemporary romance. Mentally filed it away into my "Not going to read" shelf and moved on. Then I saw descriptions on other people's blogs which made me realize I did want to read this book. Why? Despite the cover, it's not really a romance. Here's the Goodreads description:
When Travis returns home from a stint in Afghanistan, his parents are splitting up, his brother’s stolen his girlfriend and his car, and he’s haunted by nightmares of his best friend’s death. It’s not until Travis runs into Harper, a girl he’s had a rocky relationship with since middle school, that life actually starts looking up. And as he and Harper see more of each other, he begins to pick his way through the minefield of family problems and post-traumatic stress to the possibility of a life that might resemble normal again. Travis’s dry sense of humor, and incredible sense of honor, make him an irresistible and eminently lovable hero.
3. From reading someone's review: this book is written from Travis's point of view. So, this is conceivably a book you could get a boy to read. Male protagonist, male POV, war, death, etc. None of this is conveyed by the girly cover. In fact, even if you talked this book up and a boy agreed to try it... he'd see the cover and pass on it. No way would a boy be seen with a book with this cover.
These are the reasons why Something Like Normal is my "I Hate This Cover" for the month of June.
Note to publishers: when you put out the paperback edition, try putting a guy in camouflage next to a tank or something.

ReplyDeleteI hate covers with people's faces on it. Most of them. Yeah this one sucks, I agree. I wouldn't have picked it up either and thank you for putting up a summary cause I wouldn't have bother to ever look it up.
ReplyDeleteI got an email from the author- Trish Doller- saying that she had read my post. Yes, this one. And read my review and thanked me for giving her book a chance even though I didn't like the cover. Isn't she a great sport? Unlike a lot of authors having a tizzy fit this year?
